Wifey's Experiment with the Aesthetics of Food

Wifey's Experiment with the Aesthetics of Food

A pop-up gallery meets café in Park Slope, named Wifey, upholds the spirit of creativity that the city of New York represents while carrying out the business of feeding its patrons in the most extravagant manner. Wifey is a unique space in Flatbush Avenue that includes a gallery of contemporary artworks; they also specialize in making exotic food and beverages. Owners Simone Shubuck and Janine Foeller met through the art world. Foeller owned Wallspace, a gallery in Chelsea, for over a decade, and Shubuck is a contemporary artist and floral designer; her art is on display at Wifey. Shubuck, though, has close ties to the food industry.

The Village Voice notes that the owners are reluctant to use the word café because they always wanted to create a space that exists outside of the traditional parameters and expectations of a food venture or an exhibition space. They have concentrated on maintaining a dynamic menu with around 40 chefs and bakers including the likes of Ignacio Mattos, his pastry chef Natasha Pickowicz, and former Semilla co-owner Pam Yung. Exhibition area in the back is currently showcasing Shubuck’s intricate, abstract works on paper and gorgeous floral arrangements.
