Biafra: Sultan of Sokoto breaks silence on Operation Python Dance

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged Nigerians to live in peace with one another for the unity of the country.
He made the appeal against the backdrop of the rising number of civilian deaths linked with the on-going military invasion of the South-east and the resultant reprisal attacks in various parts of the country.
The monarch, in a statement issued in Sokoto yesterday, said that religious and community leaders should be given a chance to wade into the pockets of tension which threaten the continuous survival of the nation.
He said: “I am calling on all Nigerians to imbibe and embrace the culture and spirit of living in peace, irrespective of tribal, ethnic or regional differences.
“Nigeria would continue to remain one nation with a common goal of purposeful development. The action of some should not be allowed to tear the country apart.
“Bad ones among our people should be called to order by their elders and community leaders.
“I challenge elder statesmen to call the youth to order and educate them on the need for peaceful coexistence in their respective geo-political zones.
“As traditional leaders, we would continue to preach love among the diverse communities in our domains throughout the country.”
The Sultan said Nigeria was brought together by an act of God, despite the different ethnic group, religions and diverse rich and beautiful cultures to form one country. He said God would protect the sovereignty.
He further tasked the federal and state governments as well as security agencies in their collective efforts to bring sustained peace and development to the country.

We did not ask Buhari’s Minister to Resign – APC

The National Publicity Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, said on Friday the party has not asked the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Sen. Aisha Alhassan, to resign from the post over her recent comments in the media.
Abdullahi also said the minister’s appearance at the party’s National Secretariat, Abuja, on Thursday, was not on a summon.
Atiku-AlhassanAlhassan, who had been widely criticized over the comment on her choice of presidential aspirant for the 2019 general election, had a closed-door meeting with the party’s leadership in Abuja.
The minister had reportedly said she would support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar if he shows interest in the 2019 presidential race, saying the man had been her “godfather.”
The comment drew the ire of some APC stalwarts, who dubbed it anti-Buhari and anti-party, saying she was disloyal to the government and should resign or be sacked.
At the end of the meeting, which lasted about two hours, Alhassan avoided journalists’ enquiry on her mission at the secretariat.
Abdullahi said the minister had just a meeting with leadership of the party, but “was not asked to resign her position as may be speculated.”
‘’No, that did not come up. What we said was that we understood the context in which she said what she said.
‘’But, it was an act of indiscretion for someone occupying the position she is occupying in the party to make that kind of statement,’’ he said.

Biafra: Abia extends curfew, postpones schools resumption

Abia State Government has extended the curfew it imposed on Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state following the face-off between the Indigenous People of Biafra, led by Nnamdi Kanu, and the Nigerian Army.
The initial order was for the curfew to last till Thursday (yesterday) before it was extended till Friday (today).
But the latest announcement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Enyinnaya Appolos, said the curfew has been extended till Sunday – 6pm to 6am.
Meanwhile, resumption of schools has been moved from September 18 to September 25.
The statement by Appolos, with the title: “Further extension of curfew in Aba,” reads in full:
Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, wishes to express his appreciation to Abians and residents, particularly those living and doing business at Aba, for their support and cooperation during this trying period.
For a commercial city that is also the economic hub of the state and the South East region, the effect of the socio-economic disruption at Aba is too massive to measure at this time and the Government fully appreciates all the sacrifices made to ensure early restoration of normalcy.
We also wish to commend the efforts of the men and women of the security services currently working round the clock to restore law and order and safeguard lives and properties of law abiding citizens and residents.
After a profound review of the security situation across the state, we are compelled to extend the current curfew imposed on Aba to enable us consolidate the peace and normalcy that is gradually returning to the city.
The government is therefore seeking your continuing support and understanding for the further extension of the dusk to dawn (6pm to 6am) curfew at Aba to Sunday 17th of September 2017.
Furthermore, in order to ensure the safety of our children and wards who were billed to resume school on the 18th of September 2017, we hereby direct that the resumption be postponed till the 25th of September 2017 across the state.
It is our hope that all the measures taken so far will help to rapidly restore full normalcy to all areas of the state.”

NEWSBiafra: Governor Lalong reveals how many people were killed in Hausas, Igbos clash in Jos

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, on Friday revealed that two persons were killed during the violence between Hausas and Igbos in the Plateau, the state capital.
Speaking during a meeting with community and religious leaders at the Government House in Jos, Lalong said while two persons were killed several others were injured and hospitalized.
The governor charged all community and religious leaders to ensure peaceful coexistence in their respective places of authority.
Stressing that his government would ensure the protection of lives and property, Lalong urged residents of the state, irrespective of religion, ethnic and economic status to remain calm.
“Community leaders must ensure peace in their domains, I as a governor, I cannot be everywhere, you must ensure that peace reigns. Let us talk to our youth to avoid taking laws into their hands.”
“Government will handle the situation effectively, nobody is above the law.
“Our security operatives are up and doing. Anyone found wanting will face the full wrath of the law, that is why we imposed curfew.
“We will ensure maximum security measures in all parts of the state to ensure that no citizen is harmed. As I speak with you, similar meetings are ongoing in all our local government councils.”
Following violence between Hausa and Igbos in Jos, on Thursday, the governor had declared a dusk to dawn curfew in the state.

NEWSBiafra: Two Anambra governorship candidates reveal those behind Abia killings

Two candidates in the forthcoming Anambra governorship election have blamed political leaders from the South-East, particularly those from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) for the on-going military torture and killings in parts of Abia state.
Osita Chidoka, who is the flag-bearer of the United Progressive Party (UPP), and Valentine Onwuka, who is the governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), stated this in separated statements.
Chidoka, said in his statement that he stood by his previous media comments in which he alleged that Igbo leaders in the APC and the APGA were culpable in the military invasion of the South East.
He, however, urged the youths that despite the provocation in the South East, they should not resort to violence.
“After we blamed the escalation of hostilities against the region on the silence of Igbo leaders in APC and APGA, we have been inundated by the two parties attempting to rationalize their failure.
“They should direct their explanations, if they have any, to the people and not to us. They should face the people and rationalize to them the harassment, humiliation and killing of our unarmed brothers and sisters,” the statement, added.
It could be recalled that Osita Chidoka Campaign had kicked against the heavy deployment of troops and weapons to the southeast states by the military for its operation, tagged “Exercise Egwu Eke II” (Python Dance II) in the region.
On his part, Onwuka, condemned the military operation in Abia State as ill-advised and preposterous.
Onwuka, in his statement, said that the South East governors’ inactions were to blame for the rise of the secessionist movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
“I would want to state categorically without equivocation that the South East governors should as a matter of urgency resist any attempt to create mayhem in the region.
“If they had acted proactively and galvanised people through positive education and evident show of genuine concern, we won’t be here today.
“The masses have lost hope in their ability to be true representatives of the people, and would rather go for an alternative perceived to be in tune with their needs.
“This is the reason I have always maintained that we must start electing individuals that would represent our core ideologies as a people and align with the positive leanings of the masses.
“We must squeeze out of the money politics and politics of aggrandisement, if we are to have any meaningful change that can ensure that the type of carnage we just saw in the South East in the name of ‘Operation Python Dance’ does not happen again, “ he said.

NEWSBiafra: Atiku finally speaks on IPOB, army clash in Abia

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has finally reacted to the clash between the Nigerian Army and members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in Abia State.
Atiku, who enjoys the Turakin Adamawa title, said dialogue remained the best option for the looming war in eastern part of the country.
Report had it last night that a combined team of the Nigerian Army, the Police and the DSS had invaded the home of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), abducting his parents and siblings.
Reacting to the clash, Atiku called on governors from the south and the north to reach a truce on the nagging crisis.
He said, “I join my party, the APC to call for restraint from all sides in the aggression happening in Abia State.
“We hear each other better if we speak peacefully. Everyone, please stop escalating the situation. Let us dialogue and listen to each other.
“I appreciate our governors both North and South, for their efforts to maintain calm. Meeting with stakeholders is important and should continue.”
Meanwhile, the Biafra National Guard (BNG) has lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari for sending Nigerian Army troops to south-east.
The group said the military occupation was to carry out massacre and urged Igbos by all means necessary defend themselves against soldiers deployed to the region.
